Most conversations about steel decarbonisation focus on future pathways and long-term targets. But what about the companies already making it happen today? Despite massive technological, financial, and policy hurdles, some organisations across the world have moved beyond planning to actually operationalising low-carbon solutions.
We’re thrilled to present yet another insightful knowledge sharing event from the India Green Steel Network. “Green Steel 60: Lessons from steel companies decarbonising now”
What you’ll discover
Real implementation insights from two very different approaches:
Decarbonising existing operations in India: Mr Naveen Ahlawat from Jindal Steel and Power Ltd shares how they’re navigating the transition from brown to green steel, including hydrogen injection into DRI plants, carbon capture and utilisation.
Building greenfield sustainable iron production in France: Gwenaël Podesta from GravitHy reveals how they’re developing a flagship renewable hydrogen-based DRI plant designed to supply decarbonised inputs to steel makers across European and global markets.
Watch the complete webinar below and learn how these two distinct organisations are charting the path forward for the global steel industry.
Why this matters now?
Steel contributes just 0.7% to India’s GDP but accounts for 7% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. With 70% of global steel still made using blast furnace routes, the industry must lead the change.
But here’s what’s encouraging: companies aren’t waiting for perfect conditions. They’re starting with low-hanging fruit – circularity, energy efficiency, renewable energy integration – and building towards more complex solutions like hydrogen injection and carbon capture.
As one speaker noted: “It’s not going to be easy, but we need to start. It’s a marathon with a lot of distance to be covered.”
